Markets explanation: Asian Handicap

Asian Handicap (AH) betting is a form of betting on soccer in which teams are handicapped (given or taken goals) according to their current form. In Asian Handicap betting, effectively the draw is taken out of play and a competitive market formed. So rather than deciding between home, draw and away, you simply decide which team you think is the best bet. The handicap is expressed in terms of goals or part of a goals (0.25, 0.5, 1.75, etc.). There are five possible outcomes when you choose to bet on Asian Handicap:

  • WIN - you win your stake multiplied by the odds
  • HALF WIN - you win half of your stake multiplied by the odds and half is returned
  • VOID (REFUND) - your stake is returned. No win no loss
  • HALF LOSE – you lose half of your stake, half is returned
  • LOSE – you lose all your stake

Asian Handicap (AH) can be expressed with a (+) or a (-) meaning it gives number of goals advantage to the weaker team or number of goals disadvantage to the favorite. Below, a guide is formed so you can better understand the main principals of handicap betting:

Asian Handicap 0 (Draw-no-bet)

The game starts at 0:0 – no advantage is given or taken to any team. If your team wins by any result you win the bet, if he loses – you lose. Here you are betting without the draw being an option - If the game goes draw your bet is refunded (Void).

Example: Chelsea vs Arsenal

You bet $100 on Arsenal (0 AH) at odds 1.90. If Arsenal win by any result, you win $100 x 1.90 = $190. If a possible draw occurs – you get your stake ($100) back. If Arsenal loses the game you lose your bet too. Same goes with Chelsea (0 AH).

Asian Handicap +/-0.25 (0, +/-0.5)

Here the game starts +/-0.25 goals. The underdog is advanced with a quarter goal or the favorite is taken a quarter of a goal before kickoff. The draw option is eliminated. This handicap is more complicated so let’s further examine it by two examples.

Example: Roma vs Juventus

1st: You bet $100 on Roma to win (-0.25 AH). If Roma win by any result, you win $100 x 2.00 = $200. If a draw occurs – you lose half of your stake ($50) and get the other $50 back (half loss). If Juventus win the game, you lose your all stake.

2nd: You bet $100 on Juventus to win (+0.25 AH). If Juventus win the game, you win $100 x 1.80 = $180. If a draw occurs – you get half of your stake ($50) back and win the other $50 at odds 1.80 (half win). This means, you get $50 + $90 ($50x1.80) and your total profit is $140. If Roma win the game by any result, you lose your all stake.

Asian Handicap +/-0.5 (0, +/-1)

The game starts at +/-0.5 goals. The underdog is advanced with half a goal or the favorite is taken half a goal before kickoff. The draw option is eliminated. There is no money back option here – you will either win or lose your money. Asian handicap +/-0.5 is basically the same as betting on 1X2.

Example: Bayern Munich vs Shalke 04

1st: You bet $100 on Bayern Munich to win (-0.5 AH). Bayern needs to win the game by any result to win the bet. In any other cases, you lose your money. So, if Bayern wins – you win $100 x 1.85 = $185. If Shalke 04 or the match draws you lose.

2nd: You bet $100 on Shalke 04 to win (+0.5 AH). Shalke needs to win or tie the game by the end of the ’90 minutes. If one of those occurs, you win $100 x 2.00 = $200. If Bayern Munich wins the game – you lose your bet.

Asian Handicap +/-0.75 (0.5, +/-1)

The game starts at +/-0.75 goals. The underdog is advanced with 3/4 of a goal and the favorite is taken 3/4 before kickoff. The draw option is again eliminated. It is slightly different from +/-0.25 AH as you will see in the example.

Example: Real Madrid vs Valencia

1st: You bet $100 on Valencia to win (+0.75 AH). If Valencia wins or ties the game you win $100 x 1.80 = $180. If Real Madrid wins by 1 goal difference (0-1, 1-2, 2-3), you lose half of your bet ($50) and the other $50 is retuned (half loss). In case Real Madrid wins by more goals than 1 – you lose your all stake.

2nd: You bet $100 on Real Madrid to win (-0.75 AH). If Real wins the game by 2 or more goals you win $100 x 1.90 = $190. If Real wins by exactly 1 goal (1-0, 2-1, 3-2), you get half of your stake ($50) back and win the other $50 at 1.90 (half win). The result is $50 + $95 ($50x1.90) = $145. In case the game is tied or Valencia wins you lose your all stake.

Asian Handicap +/-1

Here the game starts with one goal advantage to the underdog team or one goal passive for the favorite. The draw option is eliminated again. This case is a little easier to understand due to the fact that the handicap is a whole number.

Example: Benfica vs Porto

1st: You bet $100 on Benfica to win (-1 AH). If Benfica wins by 2 or more goals (2-0, 3-0, 3-1), you win $100 x 1.80 = $180. If Benfica wins by exactly 1 goal (1-0, 2-1, 3-2), you get your money back (void). In case Porto wins or the game is tied you lose your all stake.

2nd: You bet $100 on Porto to win (+1 AH). If the game is tied or Porto wins, you win $100 x 2.05 = $205. If Porto loses by exactly 1 goal (1-0, 2-1, 3-2), you get your money back (void). In case Benfica wins by 2 or more goals, you lose your all stake.

In-Running Asian Handicap

As well as offering odds on the 90 minute result with the draw, many bookmakers also offer the Asian Handicap in-running market. Bets on the Asian Handicap market in running are settled according to the scoreline for the remainder of the game after the bet has been struck. Any goals prior to the bet being placed are ignored for settlement purposes.

Bets on Asian Handicap on over +/-1 (as 1.25, -1.75, +2, etc.) follow the same logic as these from 0 to +/-1. The only difference being the more goals that has to be scored. Note also that the exact same rules apply to the Asian Handicap in Over/under betting. Due to the reason they are basically the same, we are not going to copy/paste the same information for the Over/under markets.
